Pablo Picasso once said “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to share it with others.”

Today is somewhat of a watershed birthday for me because it marks the direction I take as I approach the twilight years of my career.

With the above in mind, my aim for 2024 and beyond is to support an industry that has always been my first love: the world of advertising and media.

My intention is to help foster an industry full of leaders who have an extensive repertoire of best-practice leadership insights and skills that separate them from every other industry. Literally, the best of the best!

I say this because based on research over the last 12 months, an industry that brought me so much success and satisfaction in my career seems to be suffering from 2 particular people challenges, namely;

1. High churn rates of young talent as they join what they believe will be an exciting industry (it is actually) only to find that the hours are long, the pressure is high, and development in management and leadership roles is limited.

2. The absence of high-quality leadership pipelines that will ensure the most prosperous futures possible for advertising agencies, marketing services organisations and media owners.

My focus from here on in is therefore to support more leaders of these organisations who have an insatiable appetite to improve their own leadership, and those of their people, way beyond any levels they’ve achieved before. Namely; world-class solutions for leaders who want their management and leadership teams to be world-class.

By way of background…

For the last decade, and before this, during a career spanning over 20 years as a High-Performance Leader (HPL) in the world of Advertising & Media, I had the privilege to work with or alongside many other High-Performance Leaders, but also, the displeasure of working for many poor leaders too.

In between the high and low performing leaders sat the mass of average leaders who neither inspired or demotivated their people or clients, but just did enough not to get moved out or moved up. As a result, they never achieved anything special and consequently brought little to the industry.

In this respect and more so in the last few years, I’ve become somewhat of a curator and custodian of insights on leadership mindsets that have accounted for high performance, what keeps a leader in this category, and what moves them even higher still.

In effect, I’ve taken on the role of researching, acquiring, testing, developing, refining, and sharing ‘high-performance leadership know-how’ of importance to my clients. Namely, a rather unique collection of world-class assessments, insights and skills, that lift management teams and leaders to greater and greater heights.

So what is it that makes a particular leader a high performer, and way more successful than the rest?

This question has always fascinated me, and in my long career, I’ve gotten to see why some leaders rise far above the crowd versus other leaders who fell short, why some leaders consistently succeeded big time, and why other leaders failed to realise anywhere near their full potential, or for that matter, that of their teams or organisations.

As I steer towards the twilight years of my career, it’s time for me to more freely share what I’ve learned with a wider audience than just my immediate clients, so I intend to do this by:

1. Posting many of the ‘High-Performance Leadership’ mindsets and insights I’ve collected during my long career, so any manager or leader, at any level, in any industry, can consider how they compare to the best of the best, and maybe, just maybe, stop, think, and take a different approach to some of the aspects of their current leadership practices.

2. Launching ‘High-Performance Leadership’ skills assessment and facilitation services for the Advertising & Media industry, with a mission to turn more leaders into HPL’s and move more existing HPL’s even higher. But also, in doing this, developing and retaining ‘High Performance Leadership Talent’ in the industry, and creating even stronger leadership pipelines for the future prosperity of the industry.
