ARE THE OPINIONS OF OTHERS DRAGGING YOU DOWN?

If you’re looking ahead to a tough week and are one of the unfortunate people that faces listening to the continual opinions of others at work (at whatever level) about what you should do better, how you should act or what you should think, then think again and ask yourself…

Are these people credible?

Do they respect me and consequently, deserve my respect?

Can I trust them to have my back?

If the answer to these reflective questions is a resounding no, then understand that their opinions only matter if YOU think they do and YOU don’t have to think they do!

Taking on board or taking to heart the opinions and influence of such people is effectively a form of self-harm because it harms you emotionally whilst they carry on with what they’re doing; oblivious to the impact they’re having your attitude.

I know this because it’s happened to me in the past and I’ve seen it happen to so many others. Interestingly, the higher the position I’ve held, the more ignorant and selfish I’ve found people who try to influence you with their opinion as if they’re the only ones who know what’s right for you.

It’s like the high positions and status give these people the right to think they know best, and often they actually don’t.

It’s therefore your choice and a deliberate decision to make about what you accept and what you don’t; one that can be the difference between carrying the effect of these opinions around with you each day and even taking them home with you at night or dropping them completely so your mind is free from the associated stress it brings.

A key issue is that we add our own inner meaning to these opinions that isn’t really warranted and in effect, waste our mental energy with worry or stress.

So instead of adding meaning, which adds ‘fuel the fire’ inside you, drop them completely from your mind and you’ll stop them from stealing your valuable emotional energy in ways that drain you.

It’s the lightening of these inner loads that you would otherwise unconsciously carry around with you that lifts the weight from your mind and frees you up to be more true to yourself.

Inner freedom from the influence of others therefore arrives not as we add anything but as we rid ourselves of useless concern or worry, the very burdens that wear people down.

Your brain will fight this approach with every tool it has and will raise a multitude of evasions, resistances, counterfeit ideas and excuses because that’s the way it’s been wired for so long… and it will stay that way unless and until you make a conscious decision to alter it.

It’s easy to assume that the present way of thinking about these people is the only way there is but it’s not, there is an alternative, a better alternative and it means taking control of your own thinking rather than allowing the opinions and influence of others to dictate how you feel.

You must tune into how you want to feel and not how they ‘make’ you feel or at least, previously made you feel.

What’s the purpose in taking this approach you might ask, the purpose is that:

You want a brighter tomorrow to look forward to

You want to remove the control others have over you

You want inner freedom from stress and worry about the opinions of others

You want to live your life your way

You want to have energy in abundance

You want to be unafraid of others and feel confident in yourself

This and any other benefit can be achieved by replacing habitual thinking with this new insight and make it work for you.

With this in mind, make a deliberate decision not to add any emotional meaning to or let these opinions affect how you feel about yourself, what you do or how you do it.

Keep in mind this simple phrase “The opinions of others only matter if I think they do and I don’t have to think they do!

That said, have a good week!

Best,

Reece
