In a World Where You Can Be Anything, Why Be Average?

As a coach, I have the privilege to work with individuals who seek to realise more and more of their potential, and even though I understand human nature more than most, it still mystifies me why so many people settle for average in a world of endless possibilities.

Since early childhood, we’ve constantly been bombarded with messages urging us to conform, fit in, behave, don’t rock the boat and in effect, be average.

And yet, we live in an era where innovation, creativity, and individuality are celebrated more than ever before. Despite this, many still find themselves trapped in the confines of societal expectations, settling for the mundane instead of daring to reach for the extraordinary.

But why should we settle for average when we have the potential to be so much more? Each of us is born with unique talents, passions, and dreams waiting to be unleashed upon the world. Whether it’s through art, science, entrepreneurship, or any other avenue, there’s boundless potential within each of us waiting to be realised, if only we would find the inspiration to do so.

When we choose to embrace our uniqueness and strive for greatness, we not only fulfil our own potential but also inspire others to do the same. Every extraordinary individual throughout history started by questioning the status quo and refusing to accept the limitations imposed upon them. From inventors and explorers to artists and activists, they dared to be different, and in doing so, they reshaped the world.

Moreover, embracing our individuality and pursuing excellence doesn’t just benefit ourselves — it benefits society as a whole. Innovation thrives in environments where diversity of thought and expression is encouraged. By breaking free from the shackles of average, we contribute to a richer, more vibrant world where new ideas can flourish and progress can be made.

Of course, the journey to significance is not without its challenges. It requires courage, perseverance, grit, determination, and a willingness to embrace the uncomfortable, including failures as stepping stones to success and not ‘stopping stones’.

But the rewards far outweigh the risks. By refusing to settle for average, we open ourselves up to a life filled with meaning, fulfilment, and the satisfaction of knowing that we’ve made the most of our time on this planet.

So, in a world where you can be anything, why be average?

For those who reject the notion of settling for less and instead strive for the extraordinary, the rewards are exactly that, extraordinary.

Not everyone needs a coach to draw out this potential and whether you do or you don’t, my advice is to embrace your uniqueness, pursue your deepest desires, live by your highest values, create guiding principles that ensure you take the right direction in life for you, achieve your biggest goals, and dare to leave a mark on the world that is anything but average. You don’t have to change the world but you can change your world if you pause and ask yourself…

Why settle for mediocrity when my realm of possibilities stretches far beyond the ordinary?
