ROBOTIC-THINKING HAS TO BE THE CHIEF ENEMY OF POWER-THINKING IN BUSINESS TODAY DOESN’T IT?
Every business seeks creativity and innovation to give it more power in the marketplace and individuals seek this to give them more power in their careers… and yet, have you noticed how some people still tend to think along the same lines day after day without ever realising that these habitual thoughts limit their creativity and lead them nowhere better than yesterday?
In effect, people are acting like robots programmed to come to work in ‘autopilot’ and because they’re surrounded by ‘like-minded’ people (other robots) they all continue to think the same way, do the same things in the same ways and get the same results, which blocks progress and limits growth.
Focused attention on creating a better and more valuable tomorrow for everyone concerned however, is a powerful force for good and the most successful teams I’ve worked with have always been looking to do exactly this.
How do you break the pattern of ‘more of the same’?
The first step in rising above limiting habitual-thinking is to become aware that you’re doing just this. By doing so, you enable more powerful creative thinking because you slow down, stop, genuinely think with the ability to move forward from new, fresh, creative perspectives.
You’ll no doubt have heard the following question and answer;
“What do you get if you motivate an idiot… a motivated idiot!”
They don’t need speeding up but pulling back, we need to slow them down, stop them and point them in the right direction or help them find a better direction for themselves.
This isn’t to suggest the workplace is full of idiots of course, although I’m sure we all know a few :) but that running on autopilot can sometimes be considered idiocy in the face of a desire for personal and professional growth, satisfaction and fulfilment. Nobody will get more of these benefits by just doing more of the same!
In this hectic, busy, frantic world of work where the pace of life just seems to be accelerating, we risk going faster down the same old routes by following the same old routines if we’re not careful with how we think.
If we want to see more opportunities to be creative and speed up our progress, we will do well first to slow down. It may sound counter-intuitive in this ‘always on & always running’ world but every successful team I’ve ever worked with has done exactly this and managed to stand out in a crowd of ‘sameness’ because they did different things in different ways.
In short, don’t be just another ‘robot’ but a creator of value, for yourself, others and your business. And if your team leader or senior management teams aren’t actively providing the space for you to do this, do it for yourself or find a team or company that does because they are out there.
