A near-derelict house, no bathroom, just an outside toilet. My mum took it because the alternative was unthinkable—me, my brother, and my sister, separated into different children’s homes. My father? An alcoholic. In and out of prison. In and out of our lives. Emotional and physical abuse came with the package. He died aged 44 from booze and sleeping pills My mother?
